Symptoms & Preventative Measures

When a Apple Computer Company iPod Touch 2Gen needs a LCD Display

Screen has 'ink' on it

Screen shows little or not content, and it looks like someone spilled ink on your screen. Sometimes you will find vertical colored/ white lines on the displaying portion of the screen. Other damage that occurs during this kind of damage usually is a cracked glass lens/digitizer. Damage usually occurs from sitting on the iPhone, or widespread pressure (as apposed to pinpoint pressure), or dropping the ipod touch on it's back. Replacement of the LCD will repair any dead pixels, vertical pixel lines or dead pixel horizontal lines. Does not include the glass lens/digitizer.

Preventative Measures include using a case for your iPod Touch that creates seperation between objects and the screen. Cases that don't create a 'lip' on the glass side of the screen may be fashionable, but provide no protection. An Otter Box™ protective case on the other hand, provides significant protection against impact damage to the front, back or sides of the iPod Touch. Screen protectors provide limited protection as they do not prevent PSI breaks (Pounds per Square Inch) where pinpoint pressure causes the screen to crack, however, it will aid in protection against sliding cracks where impact is minimal but objects harshly abrase the screen. For LCD breaks, the thicker & more padded the case, the better to cushion impact.

Dead Pixels

Dead Pixels are individual points on the LCD screen that do not show any color, but are gray. Typically, dead LCDs come in groups, usually in a hoizontal fashion. Damage usually occurs from pinpoint pressure from pressing on the glass lens/digitizer too hard, or sometimes from extreme heat.

Preventative Measures include using an Otter Box™ protective case, and keeping the iPod Touch out of the sun for long periods of time.

Stuck Pixels

Stuck Pixels are individual points or vertical lines of white, red, green and/or blue pixels. Vertical lines will tend to 'flash' or strobe, and sometimes move. This usually happens from damage to the LCD processing chip, and is only resolved by an LCD replacement. Individual pixels that are 'stuck' on an individual color are usually at the fault of the manufacturer, and can sometimes be fixed using a pixel fixer you can download for free from the iTunes Store. Unfortunately, unless you are still under warranty, you cannot get the manufacturer to replace the screen. If you get your LCD replaced by us, it comes with a 1 Year Warranty, which includes against stuck pixels due to manufacturing.

Preventative Measures include using an Otter Box™ protective case, and keeping the iPod Touch out of the sun for long periods of time. Individual pixels are impossible to avoid, timing depends on the quality of materials. We only use Apple Original Parts, and Warranty such parts for 1 Year.

White Screen of Death

Screen lights up white, or white with gray streaks. Damage usually means that the LCD processing chip has been irreversably damaged. However, if you find it's just solid white, typically a 'force restart' can resolve such issues. Damage usually occurs from impact damage or crushing from sitting on the iPod Touch or getting run over by vehicles (Yes, it does happen).

Preventative measures include a plastic adhesive clear/ anti-glare or reflective screen protector, a ZAGG Invisible Shield ™, or a case with a protective layer such as the Otter Box™.

Are the 2nd Generation & 3rd Generation LCD display the same?

Yes, Sometimes. The early 3rd Generation iPod Touches use the same LCD, but not all 3rd Gen iPod Touches can use a 2nd Gen LCD. They are the same size, the look the same, but they are typically not compatible. While they look similar, understand that they are typically NOT interchangable and can further damage the device by forcing the plugs onto the mainboard, or even partial plug ins while the device is transmitting to the LCD. The first and fourth generation LCDs are NOT compatible in any way.

Is this part an Original iPod Touch part?

Yes. It comes with a 1 Year Warranty against manufacturing defects or installation errors, including the part and labor to replace it. This may include dead or stuck pixels, as long as the iPod Touch's impact sensor has not indicated a significant impact since the installation. Please ensure that you pick up a warranty card at the time of repair. The warranty explicitly does not include any LCD screen that is cracked, shattered or broken in any way, damaged via fluid or water, or if the iPod Touch was repaired by any other company. Warranty validation may require further inquiry than initial inspection.
